Odesa port took part in a charity diplomatic Christmas fair

On Saturday, December 7, in the foyer of the Passenger terminal, one could see pavilions looking like islands of culture and culinary from various countries of Europe and Asia. All of them are participants of the XI Diplomatic charity Christmas fair. This event under the auspices of the Odesa State Administration, Odesa City Mayor and the public organization ‘Monster Corporation’ has been held for the 9th time. The organizers are planning to spend the funds collected at the current traditional fair for the purchase of the ‘Heating System on the Gel Plate for Patient’ for the Odesa Regional Clinical Hospital and the artificial lung ventilation apparatus for the Maternity hospital No. 1.

The fair presented pastries, dishes of national cuisine, souvenirs, New Year's gifts and decorations from Germany, Georgia, Belarus, Greece, China, Lithuania, Poland, Romania, Moldova, Peru, and many countries.

Representatives of diplomatic missions of about 30 countries participated in the grand opening of the fair. Each of them put an envelope with money in the transparent box set on the stage, which will be used to purchase the necessary medical equipment for Odesa hospitals to save the lives of children and adults.

Opening the fair, the head of the Odesa State Administration Maxim Kutsyi noted that, despite the tragic events associated with the victims of a large-scale fire in the building of the Economic College on Troitskaya 25, the organizers had decided to hold a diplomatic fair to raise funds for the purchase of vital equipment for hospitals.

Acting at the event Denis Karpov, acting general manager of Odesa Sea Port Authority, also put an envelope in the box on behalf of the enterprise’s administration.

‘Odesa port workers have always sensitively responded to all charity events,’ D. Karpov said, ‘because they are guided by the principle of ‘there is no alien misfortune’ Our employees had donated blood for victims of a fire in the building of the Economic College. We continue to raise money for the families of the victims. Today we must take part in a diplomatic fair and contribute to the acquisition of medical equipment that can save children`s life.

Among the participants of the fair, there were Hamburg Ambassador, Vice President of SE ‘Container Terminal Odessa’ (container terminal operator in Odesa port) Svetlana Yarovaia, who also contributed funds for the purchase of medical equipment. We recall that on September 6, S. Yarovaia officially became the representative of the German year Hamburg in Ukraine.

Meanwhile, the pavilions accommodated a brisk trade of national sweets and souvenirs, and amateur groups performed on the stage.

German business is interested in direct trade relations with Ukraine. The delegation from Germany visited the port of Odesa

On November 29, a delegation visited the port of Odesa, which included representatives of the German Embassy in Ukraine for Agrarian Affairs, the Ukrainian-German Chamber of Commerce, ATU (Agritrade Ukraine), German enterprises. The guests visited SE ‘CTO’, a subsidiary of HHLA, a well-known logistics group in Europe (headquarters in Hamburg).

The purpose of the visit is to show how German investments in Ukraine work for businessmen in the agricultural sector or trade not to be afraid to invest in Ukraine. This must be convinced by the experience of successful container business in the port of Odesa.

The guest was hosted by Svetlana Yaroia, Vice-President for Social and Political Relations of SE ‘CTO’ and Commercial Director Igor Yarovenko. During the presentation, presented by I. Yarovenko, it was clearly demonstrated how the company had been developing for 18 years, how the client base had been created and developed, cargo flows had been attracted, cargo delivery logistics had been developed, and the terminal's diversification had been implemented.

During the years of cooperation with the port of Odesa, the company invested 150 million euros in the development of the company's facilities. For several years SE CTO has been the leader of the container market of Ukraine.

A significant place was given to the project ‘Quarantine Pier’, which the company implements together with USPA in the face of Odesa Sea Port Authority. At the end of watching the videos, a discussion broke out, in which not only business but also representatives of the German Embassy in Ukraine took part.

After the presentation, the members of the delegation visited the new berths 1-k and 2-k, examined the rear storage areas.

-I am visiting the container terminal for the second time, where German investments are invested, - ATU project manager Andre Pilling said.- I was very impressed by the successful cooperation between the Ukrainian state-owned enterprise and German business ...

Today, the composition of our delegation is mixed: it included representatives of the economy, associations, CCI, and participants in our project. Most members of the delegation visit Odesa and the terminal for the first time. It is very important for them to see for themselves how the container business is developing in Ukraine, to understand what logistic opportunities for cargo delivery exist between Odesa and Hamburg. This is especially interesting for representatives of commercial firms and associations since recently many Germans have received negative information about Ukraine from the media. This creates certain problems in trade between the two countries, in investing in the economy of your country, since trust is most important for business.

Further A. Pilling noted that after visiting the terminal, the delegation members will tell their colleagues about what they have seen, about how German investments work in Ukraine. It is very important, the ATU project manager stressed, to bring Ukrainian products to the German market. “As a resident of Hamburg, I must note that many Ukrainian products sold in our stores come to us through Poland. And we saw German goods in your supermarkets, in particular in Tavria, that arrived in Ukraine through Poland. At the same time, we are interested in direct trade relations,’ A. Pilling summarized.

Olexiy Miaskovskii, Head of the SE ‘Odesa Port’: ‘One of the corruption schemes in the sphere of towing services has been canceled’

On December 3, a press conference of the new head of Odesa port, Olexiy Miaskovskii, was held for journalists of all-Ukrainian and local media outlets.

During the introductory speech, O.Miaskovskii (appointed acting director of the SE ‘OP’ on October 28, 2019) spoke about the measures taken by the new management to overcome the crisis in which the company is currently present, announced the most significant investment projects to be implemented on the basis of the SE ‘Odesa port’, answered numerous questions of representatives of informational organizations.

According to preliminary estimates, by the end of the year, the losses of the once extremely profitable enterprise will reach 100 million UAH. Partly, the reason is that until the end of 2016, 90% of the revenues of the SE ‘OP’ came from the port fleet, which then occupied 100% of the market of towing services in the port. Currently, due to non-transparent competition from private companies, the port fleet market share is only 13%.

One of the corruption schemes that deprived the company of its income was the private companies` hourly rent of tugs belonged to state enterprises.

Supporting this thesis, such data were given. On average, it takes 2 hours of operation for two or three tugboats to guide and set up a large ship to a berth. A private entrepreneur paid the port fleet for the use of its tugs based on the cost of an hour of operation of one tugboat. This is about 20 thousand UAH ($ 400). Thus, the state-owned enterprise received $ 2.400 for 2 hours of operation of three tugboats, despite the fact that the shipowner paid a private company 10-20 thousand dollars for towage due.

Today, this scheme has been completely canceled on the initiative of the SE ‘Odesa Port’ management.

‘Our proposals have got full support from the Minister of Infrastructure of Ukraine Vladislav Krikliy, the decision has been made, and now there are uniform rules for operating on the towing services market for everyone,’ O. Miaskovski stressed.

According to the acting head of the enterprise, the tariff applied to the module of the vessel in towing piloting is distributed in accordance with the capacity of the tugs involved in the operation. Thus, all real income received from the shipowner is distributed proportionally between all parties of the piloting.

A new calculation model has already been developed with other market entities. It allowed the company to receive income from the use of one tugboat 4 times more than with time-based leases.

- The financial plan for 2020, which we developed and sent for approval to the relevant ministry, envisages the SE ‘Odesa Port’ enterprise becoming profitable, O. Miaskovskii further noted. - It is planned to achieve this goal not only by increasing revenues from the activities of the port fleet, but also by reducing costs, abandoning the implementation of projects that were designed exclusively for the use of funds and that do not give any economic benefits, or have meaningless payback periods of 10 - 15 years.

Separately, the head of the state-owned enterprise focused on concession projects that are planned for implementation in accordance with the recently adopted Verkhovna Rada Law on Concessions.

In particular, it was about the initiative of Brooklyn-Kiev Port LLC, which, together with its partner, the world-famous carrier СМА СGМ Group, provides for the extension of the line of berths No. 43-42 at Khlebnaia Harbor and the re-profiling of a number of facilities of the Shipyard ‘Ukraine’ for container transshipment capacities development. This project is an important component of the development strategy of Odesa port.

At the same time, the issue of reorganizing the production of a ship repair plant arises. The management of the enterprise has developed a program of economic and social measures in order to minimize the negative consequences of the project for the ship repair crew.

The document provides for the preservation of workshops, equipment, machinery, and workplaces of the Shipyard ‘Ukraine’ by re-profiling production to other types of products. Especially, it considers the possibility of putting dock No. 4 for sale since its operation resumption has no prospects from an economic point of view, and combining dock No. 2 with the PSM-650 ship repair complex.

Another concession project relates to the hotel ‘Odessa’. The hotel exists on the basis of shared ownership (80% is owned by the state, asset holder of the SE ‘Odesa Port’, 20% is owned by a private company). It started operating together in 2001 and was decommissioned in 2011. Since then, the hotel has not been working.

Addressing the journalists` question, O.Miaskovskii said that according to preliminary estimates, it was necessary to invest at least 200 million UAH. The enterprise does not have such funds. The solution is to transfer it on to a private investor. Now the Directorate of the SE ‘OP’ and the SE ‘USPA’ are developing a proposal to transfer the hotel as part of a single property complex with the Passenger terminal to the concession.

During his press conference, Olexiy Miaskovskii also answered a question regarding the Ruta tanker arrested in Libya, told about the new team that came with him in October this month to manage the enterprise brought to a deep crisis. According to the acting director, new deputy directors, heads of departments and services of the SE ‘Odesa Port’ are maritime industry professionals with extensive practical experience, specialists who know the port well, but their official salaries are 8-10 times lower than those of predecessors who received sky-high salaries, not paying attention to the fast-rolling enterprise into the abyss of financial disaster.

Odesa Sea Port Authority officials underwent training and knowledge testing on labor protection issues once again

The Odesa branch of the State Enterprise ‘Odesa Sea Port Authority’ (OB SE ‘USPA’), has completed the next period of planned training and testing of knowledge on labor protection issues for managers and officials of structural units of the enterprise.

Today, 29.11.2019, one of the last to demonstrate their knowledge was the heads of departments and management services of the State Enterprise ‘Odesa Sea Port Authority’. The exam was held in a ‘round table’ format, each of those present heard the answers of their colleague to the questions posed by the commission. There was a free exchange of views between the participants. Such a format contributes to improving the knowledge and skills of managers better in matters of safe organization and conduction of work.

Benny I.A., chief state inspector of the Main Directorate of State Labor Service of Ukraine in Odesa Region, and Reshetchenko V.P., deputy head of the department for the prevention of insurance claims of the Odesa city branch of the Social Insurance Fund of Ukraine, took part in this event.

A regular meeting of the Port Council was held in Odesa port: The USPA offers stevedores to switch to direct contracts with Ukrzaliznytsia and to compensate for the costs for maintaining the fire safety service

The adoption of the new edition of the Mandatory Resolutions on Odesa sea port, the situation with the reform of the port Harbor Master service, the issue of reducing tariffs for services in the port and the situation with the allocation of land for the construction of an alternative entrance to the port.

These and other issues were included in the agenda of the next meeting of the Odesa Port Council. The round table discussion was held yesterday, November 28, 2019, in the main office of the Odesa branch of the State Enterprise ‘Ukrainian Sea Ports Authority’ (SE ‘USPA’) under the chairmanship of Denis Karpov, acting General Manager of the branch. The meeting was attended by Raivis Vetskagans, the head of the SE ‘USPA’.

Besides, members of the Council considered the advisability of switching stevedoring companies to direct contracts with the railway. During their speeches, business representatives agreed that dispatching railway operations in the port is not a function of the port Authority. At the same time, port operators expressed a unanimous position on the premature transition to direct contracts with the railway in the near future. According to stevedores, first it is required to wait for the conclusions of the working group created this year, which is developing a strategy for modernizing the railway infrastructure and optimizing railway operations in the port.

The group leader Anastas Kokkin, chief executive officer of the SE ‘CTO’, noted that research in this direction was progressing quite successfully. Highly qualified specialists from the Dnieper Research Institute of Railway Transport are involved in the performance of the work. The experts will be ready to submit a business plan for the further development of the railway component of the port at the end of the first quarter, next year.

Among the topical issues on the agenda, the meeting participants also discussed the proposal of the SE ‘USPA’ to partially compensate the expenses of the port Authority by the stevedore companies for the maintenance of the corporate fire safety service (FSS).

According to Igor Kizlak, deputy chief engineer of the OD SE ‘USPA’ for labor safety, told the audience that more than two hundred fire alarm signals, including ones from the production facilities of private companies (ignition of cigarette butts, short circuits of electrical equipment, careless handling of fire, disrepair of technical equipment and machinery, etc.) occur at the corporate service panel.

As the speaker admitted, the effective prevention of large-scale fires that can lead to loss of life and damage to millions of hryvnias is possible only under the conditions of 1) carrying out preventive work to prevent fires and 2) timely supply of fire extinguishing substance at the ignition site. At the same time, it should be borne in mind that fire engines of the units of the State Emergency Service nearest to the port need 20-25 minutes to arrive at the site of ignition in the port. Moreover, the performance of such units is objectively reduced by the lack of knowledge of the port specifics and the experience of extinguishing fires on boats.

Obtaining this information, representatives of the stevedoring business fully supported the thesis about the need for corporate fire protection in the port and generally agreed with the proposal to compensate costs of maintaining such a unit on a pro rata basis.

As an option, they proposed to work out the detachment of FSS to a separate business entity, so that it would be possible to direct financing with targeted payments. Stevedoring companies have to provide other proposals on this issue over time, within the period established by the protocol.

In conclusion, participants of the Port Council meeting approved a preliminary schedule for such meetings in the next 2020 (quarterly).

Odesa Sea Port Authority expressed respect to the Captain of the cruise ship MS AMERA

Today, October 30, 2019, representatives of Odesa Sea Port Authority expressed respect to the administration of the first foreign cruise ship visiting Odesa after more than a two-year break. Denis Karpov, acting General Manager of the Odesa branch of the State Enterprise ‘Ukrainian Sea Ports Authority’, Ruslan Sakhautdinov, Deputy General Manager on operation services of the branch, and Ihor Panchenko, head of cruise infrastructure and external relations service boarded the MS AMERA liner (204 m, flag - Bahamas). Jens Thorne (German), Captain of MS AMERA, hosted the guests on the ship’s bridge. The parties exchanged souvenirs and impressions from today's call of the cruise ship to the Odesa port.

‘Today's visit of AMERA was a joyful event for the inhabitants of Odesa, who have been deprived of observing the silhouettes of large familiar to the city passenger ships at the berths of the passenger terminal for more than two years,’ D. Karpov noted. ‘This is also a significant moment for us since the arrival of the vessel was the result of the constant and systematic efforts of port Authority towards the restoring of cruise shipping in the Black Sea after the events in Ukraine and Turkey in 2014-2016. Despite unfavorable circumstances, Odesa port has not stopped coordinating with its cruise business partners a single day, took part in international tourism forums and has been an active member in the framework of the Medcruise Association. During negotiations with our partners, we reasonably proved that Odesa, being called the sea capital of Ukraine, is still hospitable and safe for foreign tourists. I hope you have made sure of that today.’

During the conversation, D. Karpov also emphasized the symbolism of MS AMERA's call: the “first swallow” of the white ships` return to the Black Sea has the logo of the shipowner Phoenix Reisen on its pipe, a white seagull against the Sun. Others will follow the first seagull: the port expects 11 cruise liners with a foreign flag next year and 16 applications were received for 2021

The captain of the MS AMERA vessel, in his turn, admitted that it is not his first call of a passenger ship to Odesa harbor. He had an opportunity to verify the hospitality of Odesa residents more than five years ago. When a severe storm arose on the sea and his vessel was forced to stay in Odesa port for three days, the cruise administration received all kinds of assistance from local travel agencies, which expanded and diversified the program for tourists in our city. At the same time, the captain maintained close contact with port Authority: the vessel was provided with everything necessary.

‘This is not the first time I have been visiting you, and I gladly accepted the news of the opportunity to see your port and the Potemkinskaia stairs again, which I have already climbed earlier,’ Captain Jens Thorn concluded his speech.

At the end of the meeting, the captain kindly invited the guests to take a short tour around the vessel, which has been renovated for several tens of millions of dollars this year.

As previously reported, MS AMERA will leave Odesa port today at 18:00 and head for Istanbul.

MedCruise General Assembly: Cruise companies are still interested in calling to the Black Sea region and Odesa in particular

From 1 to 4, October 2019, Antibes (France) was holding the next General Assembly of the MedCruise, Association of Mediterranean ports and adjacent seas. Being a member of this international cruise infrastructure organization, Odesa port took part in the event. The enterprise was represented by Julia Strikh, the head of the tourism and European integration department of port Authority.

‘Participation in the events held by MedCruise is very important for us,’ J. Strikh stated. “This is an opportunity to negotiate in B2B format with leading cruise business players and the international press representatives specializing in this issue. Our first priority is to cover the activities of the Black Sea regionworking group aimed at restoring cruise tourism on the Black Sea as much as possible, to talk about the tourist attractiveness of Odesa, new routes and excursion programs of our city. According to representatives of the cruise business, interest in the Black Sea region and Odesa, particularly, remains.

The representative of Odesa port held about 15 meetings with journalists of the international press and top managers of cruise companies. In particular, B2B meetings were conducted with representatives of such international publications as International Cruise & Ferry Review, Cruise Times, Seatrade Cruise Review, Cruise Insight, The Cruise Diaries, Cruise News Media Group, Cruise Business Review. It was managed to agree on 7 free publications on the activities of the Black Sea working group, the first results, namely those planned for 2020-2021 calls at the Black Sea ports, as well as the tourist attractiveness of Odesa on the Internet or in print media. Such publications are one of the activity areas of the Black Sea working group, as they allow not only to provide information about the Black Sea ports, but also to popularize the cities of the region.

Besides, meetings with representatives of cruise companies were also held in the B2B format. During these meetings, top managers of such companies as Holland America Line, TUI Cruises, Carnival Corp. expressed their position: they are waiting for the situation after the opening of a new passenger terminal in Istanbul in 2020. The opening of the terminal in Istanbul, which is the gateway and base port for many cruise companies on the Black Sea, will serve as a boost for passenger liners to return to this region, including Odesa.

For instance, Carnival Corporation representatives stated that due to adverse events in Istanbul and the geopolitical situation in Ukraine, the vessels of the companies included in the corporation were not going to return to the Black Sea region until 2021. Seabourn company must be the first to make calls.

MSC Vice President announced the planned expansion of the fleet until 2023, which should be replenished with small vessels capable of unchallenged passing through the Bosphorus Strait.

Ponant, which had submitted two applications for calling at Odesa port in 2020 and two in 2021, is going to continue including Odesa port along with other ports of the Black Sea region in tourist itineraries since about 40 percent of total consumer demand falls on the Black Sea region.

Scenic Luxury Cruises Development Manager said that, finally, the company was able to make a schedule of calls for the coming years. So, in 2022, from 1 to 2 calls to Odesa port are planned.

In general, almost all representatives of the cruise companies noted the positive tendency of the gradual return of ‘white ships’ to the ports of the Black Sea region.

ODESA SEA PORT: in 2021 and 2022, apart from the scheduled ship calls, additional cruise vessels are expected in the port

On 11-13 of September, Seatrade Europe 2019, the annual international exhibition of the cruise industry was held in Hamburg (Germany). Odesa Sea Port Authority was represented at this status event by Igor Panchenko, head of the cruise infrastructure and external relations service and Julia Strikh, head of tourism and European integration department, as well as Ekaterina Leshcheva, head of the Tourist Information Center of Odesa.

Thanks to the joint participation in the exhibition of employees of the State Enterprise ‘USPA’ and the head of the city institute, it was possible to provide representatives of cruise companies with comprehensive information about the security situation in the Black Sea region and Odesa. Potential partners were interested in the technical characteristics of the passenger terminals of Odesa, Constanta, Varna, Burgas and coastal tourism services, the amount of port charges and other issues.

- Each participation of Odesa Sea Port Authority in the events of the cruise industry is another step on the difficult path of restoring cruise shipping in the Black Sea region and, in particular, to the Odesa port. And this intense and consistent work is producing results. This time, the outcome of the talks in Hamburg exceeded all expectations. The Odesa delegates held about 12 meetings with representatives of various departments of the following cruise lines: Costa Cruises, Royal Caribbean Cruises, Holland America Line, Silversea Cruises, Noble Caledonia, and others. The negotiations made it possible for us to expect additional 6 ship calls besides the announced 11 calls in 2021, and 2 additional calls in 2022, - Igor Tkachuk, General Manager of Odesa Sea Port Authority commented the Odesa delegates visiting the Seatrade Europe 2019 exhibition.

According to the talks, the forecasts for the coming years are favorable. Many world-famous companies announced their return to the Black Sea region, in particular to Odesa, in 2021 and 2022. For example, Silversea Cruises are going to return to Odesa in 2021 (the vessel Silver Shadow). Christopher Allan, Royal Caribbean's Itinerary Planning Director said that apart from four (2 in 2020 and 2 in 2021) announced ship calls, another 3 additional Azamara Cruises were expected in 2021, as well as a possible call of Celebrity Cruises in 2022. James Buchanan, head of ground operations of Noble Caledonia announced the company’s return to the Black Sea region since 2021 (Caledonian Sky liner).

The companies that are not planning to call at the port of Odesa (Holland America Line, Celestyal Cruises) during the next 2 years were provided with all the information of interest, including discounts on port charges and the tourist potential of Odesa.

The representatives of the port Authority admit interest of the cruise companies in returning to the Black Sea region and the Odesa port, in particular, as well as the positive tendency of the increasing demand of cruise passengers on visiting the Black Sea ports.

Odesa port initiates the launch of a joint with the Сity Council coordinating body to formulate a cruise tourism development strategy

Odesa returns to Europe's cruise hub club. Today, 11 requests to visit the maritime capital of Ukraine by passenger ships under the foreign flag for 2020 and 10 applications for 2021 have been received. This breakthrough against the background of last year's zero indicators and two requests for 2019 was the result of the active cooperation of Odesa Sea Port Authority with the world`s largest Cruise Port Association Medcruise and Black Sea Working Group Meeting partners. At the same time, at the local level, the coordination of the port and the city authorities` efforts in the development of cruise tourism have sporadic character. Transfer these contacts into the collaborative system work area opens up opportunities to serve passengers of ‘white steamers’ in Odesa at a new level. This was discussed at the working meeting with the port representatives and executive committee of the Odesa City Council yesterday, 22 August.

Tatyana Markova, the director of the Department of Culture and Tourism and Alexander Ilko, the director of the Department of Transport, Communications, and Traffic, represented the City Council in the discussion. Odesa Sea Port Authority was represented by Ruslan Sakhautdinov, Deputy General Manager on operation services of Port Authority, Ihor Panchenko, Head of Cruise Infrastructure and External Relations Services, Yuliia Strikh, Head of Tourism and European Integration Department.

- In order to bring back the big cruise ships to Odesa, we actively use the tools of the negotiation platforms of the largest tourist forums in Europe and the United States, including the international Cruise Shipping Miami International Exhibition and Conference and The General Assemblies of the Medcruise Association, - states R. Sakhautdinov. — At the same time, our negotiations with cruise line operators could be more effective if a representative of the Odesa City Council took part in them. After all, addressing many cruise ship onshore issues belongs to the competence of the city government. This concerns the organization of the excursion buses movement in the conditions of dense car traffic, providing comfortable conditions for physically disabled tourists movement in the city streets and so on. And moreover, in the leading cruise ports of Europe port authorities and city authorities jointly create a tourism development strategy …

Among other things, the working meeting participants discussed the issues of tourist coastal services, announced by representatives of the maritime travel industry at 54th General Assembly of Medcruise (May 2019, Kusadasi, Turkey). In particular, the meeting concerned the improving of the public transport system, launching proper social structure for tourists (sanitary areas, medical assistance, transferring with children), enhancing public safety at the historic center during cruise vessel calls in the harbor. Cruise companies also want to get up-to-date marketing forwarding with tourist products at the local level.

- A program of tourism development in Odesa launched a year ago was introduced a new destination, cruise tourism, - noted T. Markova – So, obviously, today we are negotiating with the Port about cooperation in this industry. We hope that representative of the City Council and other representatives of the port will be proxy to our partners the cultural and historical heritage and tourist routes of our city at the next Medcruise General Assembly. We also welcomed the news of the establishment of the permanent working group on the initiative of Odesa Port, which will be participated by representatives of Ukraine, Romania, Bulgaria, and Turkey. I think we could also be involved in the marketing practices of this body. Moreover, we have something to present: for the last years the Executive Committee of the City Council has made a real breakthrough in tourist infrastructure arrangements, we participate in 33 international tourism exhibitions, we have a large number of high-quality promotional materials.

In his turn, O. Ilko stated that the creation of the relationship between the City Council and the state enterprise represented by Odesa Sea Port Authority will greatly facilitate the work of the city Department of Transportation aimed at preventing technological disruptions during cruise tourists servicing in the historical center of Odesa.

At the end of the meeting, the participants discussed the draft of Memorandum of launching the joint coordinating development strategies body of cruise tourism in Odesa by port Authority and the Executive Committee. After signing the document, the parties will be capable of proceeding to a joint marketing action plan.

Odesa port was awarded the prestigious award of the Mediterranean cruise community

On June 25, as part of the traditional Shipping Week in Genoa, there was the first ceremony of the Mare Nostrum MedCruise Awards, an international award for shipping lines, ports, travel agents and tour operators, industry media, and others that made a significant contribution to the development of the cruise industry in the countries of the Mediterranean basin. The ceremony took place in one of the most beautiful buildings of the Italian city, Palazzo Doria-Tursi, built in the 16th century, which has been the headquarters of the municipality of Genoa.

Selection of nominees, the voting procedure and the award ceremony for the winners of the rating were organized by the world's largest Association of cruise shipping ports in the Mediterranean and adjacent seas, MedCruise, together with the port authorities of Genoa and Savona and the editors of Grimaldi Magazine Mare Nostrum.

Winners in 19 nominations were selected for the first awards ceremony of the Mediterranean Cruise Oscar for achievements in 2018, when the number of cruise tourists in the region exceeded 25 million. The title of laureate in the nomination ‘The Best Port of the Black Sea Region’ was awarded to the port of Odesa by a panel of authoritative jury.

Igor Tkachuk, the General Manager of Odesa Sea Port Authority, called the victory in the rating ‘reward for resistance’.

‘You know that in recent years, due to the geopolitical reasons, the number of cruise ship calls to Odesa Sea Port under foreign flag has begun to decline rapidly and last year this figure dropped to zero,” I. Tkachuk comments. - But all these years we have not given up and have made efforts to return the white ships to the Black Sea. First of all, this is a systematic work within the MedCruise Association. Twice a year, our representatives hold a series of meetings and talks with cruise companies during the Association's General Assemblies. We also provide the promotion of the tourist brand of Ukraine at the main international cruise forum Seatrade Cruise Global. Furthermore, the Odesa Sea Port Authority took the initiative to create an international working group of the representatives of the Black Sea cruise ports, which is actively working with cruise companies and others, informing them about the development of cruise infrastructure in the region, the safety situation and so on. The reward we received in Genoa is essentially the support of our work and at the same time, it is a signal to the market that the situation in the region has stabilized and cruise companies can include Ukrainian ports to the itinerary plan…

In order to confirm his words about the stabilization of the safety situation, I. Tkachuk gave two figures: by 2020, Odesa Sea Port had already received 11 requests for ship calls of cruise liners under a foreign flag and 8 applications had been received for the 2021 season.

Receiving the Mare Nostrum Award in one of the most beautiful ceremonial halls of Genoa, Ruslan Sakhautdinov, Deputy General Manager of Odesa Sea Port Authority, warmly thanked the President of the MedCruise Association, Mr. Airam Diaz Pastor, and the Secretary General of the Association, Mr. Jordi Caballe, for supporting the efforts of the Black Sea ports to restore cruise shipping in the region. This support, in particular, was expressed by the organization of international conferences MedCruise Black Sea Working Group Meeting, which were held in October last year in Odesa and in February of this year in Constanta, Romania.

In April of this year, at the exhibition-conference Seatrade Cruise Global in Miami (USA), also with the support of MedCruise, the ports of Odesa, Constanta, Varna and Burgas jointly presented the tourist potential of the northwestern part of the Black Sea region.

At the end of his speech, a representative of Odesa Sea Port Authority said words of gratitude to the cruise companies that return to the Black Sea and expressed appreciation to journalists from specialized media who objectively cover the situation in the Black Sea region. The words of gratitude for the warm welcome were also addressed to the municipality of Genoa, the Italian city, which Odessa has been linked with by ties of fraternal relations since 1957.

The Association of Mediterranean Cruise Ports and adjacent seas MedCruise was founded in 1996. Today it is the world's largest association of ports, shipping companies, tour operators and other structures operating in the cruise tourism industry. This brand comprises more than 70 ports of the Mediterranean, Black and Red Seas, the Middle Atlantic and 35 international corporations (107 members in total). The port of Odessa renewed its membership in the Association in 2008.

Palazzo Doria-Tursi (Palazzo Niccolo Grimaldi) was one of three palaces, the apartments of which were provided only to the most high-ranking guests of Genoa, who came with official visits, the popes, kings and emperors. The building is located in the center of Genoa at Via Garibaldi, 9. 2006, in July, this palace, along with another 41st palazzo, was inscribed on the UNESCO World Heritage List (Wikipedia).
