Andrey Petrash


Andrey Petrash (1892-1945) - a founder of the Stakhanovite movement in water transport, a foreman-innovator of well-known Brigade #241, a Holder of an Order of the Red Star.


Andrey Petrash started to work in the port of Odesa as a stevedore in 1931. In early 1935 he led Brigade #241. Majority of dockers had no experience of loader. But Petrash kept his head: he was an excellent organizer, who had considerable experience of a loader. If firstly the Brigade #214 handled wagons only, in a few months, having mastered the skills of cargo handling the team began to carry out handling of ships.


It all started with handling of steamer "Volga". The Head of the port S.Muzalev set task for Petrash to load the ship with pig iron n a shortest time. The next day, at the end of shift it appeared that the team handled 540 tons instead of usual 150 tons despite the heavy rain.


"In 1975, on the eve of the 40th anniversary of the Stakhanovite movement, one of the dockers of this brigade P.Romanenko recalled: "We have analyzed the entire process of iron load from the wagon to the steamer. Earlier, two-horse platform drove up to a wagon. The dockers manually loaded iron on these platforms. Then, they put the platforms on the parachute. And only after that, one of 8-ton berth cranes loaded the parachutes into the hold. One cycle took plenty of time... To avoid this, A.Petrash offered to load pig iron from two sites into one parachute from both sides. Thus, the crane lifted 8 tons instead of usual 3-4 tons. Petrash and the Chief Engineer of the Brigade lengthened parachute to eliminate manual work in the hold". (From the book" Odesa Port: History in humans. 2nd edition.2009".


Aaron Henkin


Aaron Henkin (1901-1974) - the famous brigadier, a stevedore, the Deputy of the Supreme Soviet of the USSR, a Holder of an Order of Lenin, the Red Banner, an author of dozen books and pamphlets on the organization of the best practices at the ports.
Aaron Henkin comes of a family of loaders. His father worked as a loading workman at the port of Odesa. After three years of studying, seven-year-old Aaron Henkin starts to work as a cleaner of ship boilers.


In 1935 he became a foreman of enlarged integrated brigade #211. Soon he became a colleague and a follower of the initiator of the Stakhanovite movement in water transport A.Petrash, and his team became one of the best not only in the port of Odesa, but also on the entire water transport.


As a follower of Petrash, Henkin was at the same time an innovator of specialized teams for individual production processes.

Before the Second World War, in 1939 he was appointed the Chief of the group to implement Stakhanovite methods at ports of the South.


After the liberation of Odesa in 1944 he returned to his native port as a stevedore-mentor. In 1945-1946 Henkin worked in Vienna and Budapest, where he organized special cargo shipping on the Danube River and the railway.


Bertha Rapoport


Bertha Rapoport (06.15.1914 - 12.07.1967) is the only one at that time woman with a degree of sea captain in the Black Sea. She was born in Odesa. Father Ya.Rapoport was a carpenter with work experience of 56 years. Mother R.Rapoport was a housewife.

Bertha Rapoport graduated from high school in 1928 and entered at Odesa Maritime College on the Navigators department and graduated from it in 1931 with a degree of maritime navigator. Started to work in February 1932 as a 4th mate. It was quite complicated for a girl to study at maritime school along with for 17-year "navigator in a skirt" to fit into the group of sailors, which were always skeptical against women at sea. However she could not only fit, but managed to rise to the rank of captain mate!


In June 1938, during the events in Spain Bertha along with the crew of "Katayama" was in fascist captivity in the port of Palma on the island of Mallorca. But she held herself bravely with dignity of Soviet seafarer.


Anatoliy Bendichenko


Anatoliy Bendichenko (1907-1966, Sevastopol) - a prominent leader in maritime industry, the Chief of the Second District of the port of Odesa, a holder of an Order of Lenin, the Red Banner, numerous medals, an honorable worker of maritime transport.


In May 1945 he was appointed the Chief of the Second District of Odesa port. Along with the team he had to set gantries cranes, clean the warehouses and berths of debris.


He led one of the largest departments of the port during 20 years, perfectly mastered not only the technology of cargo handling, but also the art of managing a team, training people, creation a healthy psychological climate in the team.


In the early to mid 60's the team of the Second District is constantly performing the annual target ahead of time while handling complicated import goods from India, Cuba, Egypt. Including imported grain and raw sugar.



Ivan Malenko

Маленко И.А.

Ivan Malenko - a holder of an Order of the Red Banner, Red Star, World War II and numerous medals.


Ivan Malenko was at the War since January 1944 and was the regimental intelligence officer. He endured all the gravity of the spring attack, participated in Kishinev operation, freed Moldova, Romania, Hungary, and Austria. Many time he risked his life beyond the front line.


While working in the port, Ivan Malenko did not show off military awards. High prestige he earned by hard work as a loader. He led Komsomol youth brigades of dockers, which managed to unload from a ship more than 100 tons of cargoes while normal output totaled 40 - 50 tons per shift. He was awarded with numerous decorations starting from the Head of the port to the Ministry of Maritime Fleet of USSR.


After an injury in 1954 he worked at warehouse, including 25 years from 1980 to 2005 on the grain harbor, when under his management  were built all the administrative and utility buildings used so far.


Vladimir Zimoglyad


Vladimir Zimoglyad (19.02.1929 - 02.07.2004, Odesa) - the famous brigadier of 148th Komsomol youth brigade of the port of Odesa, a holder of an Order of Lenin, the Red Banner of Labor, "Badge of Honor", an Honored Worker of Maritime Transport of the USSR, laureate of the State Prize of USSR, was awarded with the title "Honored Leader of the Ukrainian SSR".


V.Zimoglyad was born in a military family. By 1941 he graduated five years of schooling. After the war he continued his study at the vocational school, and later graduated from night school.


In 1963 he began to work at the First District of Odesa port as a docker. 3 years later, in 1966, he led the 148th Brigade, which later became known as "Komsomol Youth Brigade”. The team repeatedly won in socialist competition in the port and industry and was awarded with the title of "The Best Team of Maritime Fleet”, etc.


From 1978 to 1986 Zimoglyad was a member of the Central Committee of the Trade Union of Maritime and River Transport. From 1977 to 1985 was a member of Odesa Regional Committee of the Communist Party of Ukraine.



Nikolay Grigorenko

1 погрузочный район 2 Nikolay Grigorenko (14.12.1939 – 01.07.1998) - a foreman of dockers of the First District of  Odesa port, holder of an Order of Labor Glory, has repeatedly won the title of "The Best Foreman".


His career Grigorenko started as a tractor driver. After military service Grigorenko in 1962 became a docker at the port of Odesa. In 1976 he was appointed a foreman of 138th Grain Brigade. The brigade continually worked at unloading vessels with imported grain. The team repeatedly won in socialist competition among the teams of dockers in the port and in the industry as a whole.


In 1993 he was transferred to position of docker on the handling complex №1. In 1995 he transferred to work at the LLC "Olimpex Coupe International".


Zoya Ulyanova


Zoya (Zelma) Ulyanova (29.12.1924 - 11.08.99, Odesa) – the Head of the Port’s Fleet, a veteran of maritime transport, an Honored Worker of the USSR Navy, holder of an Order of Honor and other awards.


Zoya Ulyanova was a legendary woman. By reason of that her father worked at the Soviet embassy in Turkey she received education abroad. She could fluently speak Italian, French and her native Latvian languages. When in 1935 her parents returned to Odesa, Zoya did not know Russian.


In May 1944, as soon as Odesa was liberated, being  a young girl she began to work as a secretary typist at the shipping authority. In 1945, Zoya Ulyanova entered Odesa Maritime Institute. After graduating it in 1951 she came to the port of Odesa as a specialist of water transport. She worked as an economist in commercial department, then in port’s fleet as a Dispatcher and later the Senior Dispatcher. In 1966, she was appointed the Head of port’s fleet.


Zoe Ulyanov was the only woman, who has led the naval department during 16 years.


Ella Kosheleva


Ella Kosheleva (29.07.1933 – 19.02.1986, was born in the city of Rostov-on-Don) - the Head of the Repair and Building Department of the port of Odesa, holder of an Order of the Red Banner, "Badge of Honor" and other labor awards, a member of the plenum of the Party Committee of maritime transport. One of the legendary women-leaders of Odesa port.


In 1951 Ella Kosheleva graduated from high school and in the same year entered the Maritime Institute on Hydraulic Engineering Department. Upon graduation in 1956 she was sent to Vladivostok port. So far there were not housing for young personnel Kosheleva came back to Odesa on construction of the port in the Dry estuary (future Illichevsk port).


On 1 April 1957 Ella begins to work as a master in Repair and Building office in the port of Odesa. Kosheleva passed all the career steps, she used to work as a foreman, a senior foreman.


In 1963 she was appointed the Chief of Repair and Building Department. Under her leadership, the department, which was created on the second day after the liberation of the city, i.e. on 12 April 1944, was blooming. In the mid 1980's began construction of residential buildings "by Gorky method" i.e., involving developers. During 20 years - from 1967 to 1986, 1295 apartments were commissioned.


Nikolay Gleb-Koshanskiy

Nikolay Gleb-Koshanskiy (17.09.1921-27.2000) - the Staff officer of the Soviet Army, Holder of military decorations and medals, including the Order of A.Nevskiy, a founder and director of the museum of the port of Odesa named after De Wollant.


Gleb-Koshanskiy came to work in the port of Odesa in 1961, having started his career as a tallyman. He also worked as the Chief of the warehouse, led the complex of social amenities.


After retiring the General Manager of the port N.Pavlyuk suggested him to revive the museum of the port. This was an unexpected proposal, but  Gleb-Koshanskiy got carried away by this idea. Within a year he was a regular visitor of an archive, a museum, Gorky Library.


Nikolay Tymun


Nikolay Tymun (born in 1940) – a Hero of Socialist Labor, a member of the Supreme Soviet of the USSR, a laureate of Petrash Prize, laureate of the State Prize of Ukraine, an Honorary Worker of the Navy, Holder of the Order of Red Banner, the famous Brigadier self-supporting integrated brigade of Odesa port.


After military service in the Soviet army Nikolay in 1963 came to work in the port of Odesa as a docker. In 1971, he led the team № 208 (14 dockers) operating on the 14th berth.


Dockers of the 208th Brigade unloaded ships and loaded wagons such with extremely fast not. Leningrad foremen, dockers from Varna and other ports came to Tymun to gain experience. Once was estimated that for the year on account of 208th Brigade was 139 records of handling works.
