Odesa port: the tug Patriot celebrated the tenth anniversary of the Ukrainian flag raising

Exactly 10 years ago, on November 14, 2009, a grand ceremony of the national flag raising took place in the port of Odesa on the newly-built tugboat Patriot.

‘Patriot is one of the best units of our fleet. Over the years, a tugboat has flawlessly performed thousands of towing operations, not only in Odesa, but also in other ports. The Patriot also participated in rescue operations and performed other specific tasks. The experience of ten years of operation showed that the tugboat met the expectations that the port had put on it’, Alexei Myaskovsky, the acting head of the SE ‘Odessa Port’ commented on the event.

Tugboats of the ASD Tug 2310 type Patriot and its sistership Bulat - are unique vessels. They were specially designed considering the rather difficult working conditions in the harbors of Odesa port, which were built in the era of the sailing fleet. The designers of ‘Damen shipping’ managed to do the almost impossible: to ft more than 4,000 horsepower into a small building.

‘Due to such characteristics, there are a number of operations where we are indispensable, and therefore it is possible to withstand fierce and sometimes opaque competition from private towing companies. Even under such difficult conditions, last year Patriot brought the company more than 9 million hryvnias of revenue’, Alexey Subbotin, the tugboat captain said.

On the occasion of the anniversary, the crew successfully operating and maintaining the vessel in perfect condition, Vladimir Zaikov, the chairman of Odesa Port Maritime Transport Trade Union, his deputy Nikolay Nikolaev, the port fleet management of the SE ‘Odessa Port’ led by Alexander Antonov, and also the ‘godmother’ of Patriot, Tatiana Galchanskaia, a labor safety engineer at the enterprise, who 10 years ago smashed a bottle of champagne onto the side of a new tugboat for good luck.

Reference. Patriot tugboat (ASD Tug 2310 type) was built in 2009 at ‘the Damen shipping’ shipyard in China. Acquired by Odesa port under a financial leasing agreement.

The length is the largest: 22.73 m, width: 10.43 m, draft: 4.77 m, DWT: 395 tons, main engine: 2x Caterpillar 3512B (4023 hp) - maximum speed: 12.4 knots, tow force on the hook: 47 tons.

According to specialists of the Hydrotechnical Engineering Structures and Major Construction Department (HESMCD) of the Odesa branch of the SE ‘USPA’, border and middle cip beams of the berth in the amount of 85.4 cubic meters were concreted last week. Thus, on the first decade of November, the construction of the upper structure of the berth was completed up to the 8th axis (which is 165 meters or 62% of the berthing line).

Along with concrete work at the facility, it is scheduled to begin dredging the operational water area this month. The information was provided by Sergey Vatan, the leading engineer of HESMCD. Soon, the arrival of the caravan of the dredging fleet is expected, which will bring the depths at the border of the berth and approaches to 12 meters.

Reconstruction of the berth No. 7 of Odesa port: 70% of work was completed at the first start-up facility

Construction works are successfully advancing during the reconstruction of the largest berth No.7 in Odesa port, which is 357 m long. By agreement with the State Enterprise ‘Ukrainian Sea Ports Authority’, the project is implemented by the contractor, LLC Repair building trust NMP.

Reconstruction is carried out without decommissioning. Near the construction site, vessels up to 200 m long are processed, cranes are working, technological transport is moving, but this does not interfere with the work of builders.

‘In order not to stop the work of the stevedoring company, the entire project, is divided into three start-up facilities’, Maxim Shova, the acting head of the Hydrotechnical Engineering Structures and Major Construction Department (HESMCD) of the Odesa branch, explains. ‘The first facility, which is currently under construction, is 6 berth sections with a total length of 163 m. In September, the arrangement of the pile field of the berth was fully completed here. 220 metal piles 1020 and 1420 mm in diameter were immersed in the ground. In the summer, even before the pile field was completely ready, the contractor began to equip the upper structure. The works are carried out at a good pace, there were days when 250-300 cu. m of concrete were poured, that is, up to forty concrete trucks were accepted. Due to the good organization of the production process, as of the beginning of November, the concrete work of 1 start-up facility was 70% complete. This gives reason to predict the completion of the main concrete works in this month.

The complete reconstruction of the first start-up facility is expected to be fulfilled in the 1st quarter of next year. At present, according to the HESMCD, the berth will be equipped with all the necessary networks: electricity, sewage, water, communications and other utilities. The berth will be equipped with gantry rail, electric power poles, fenders and mooring devices, surface coating. The rear area will be covered with curly paving elements, the sections adjacent to the berth border will be covered with concrete slabs.

Then, after the operator, the stevedoring company Metalsukraine Corp. Ltd, transfers cranes, other machinery and equipment to the updated production facilities, creates warehouses and starts working, work on the second start-up facility should begin. This is a segment of the berth No.7, over 220 m long. The completion of this reconstruction stage is scheduled for the end of 2021.

According to the project, the third start-up facility will put an end to the reconstruction which is dredging the water area of the Quarantine harbor at the berth border and water approaches.

Reference. Berth No. 7 of Odesa port is located in the operation of the company Metalsukraine Corp. LTD since 1993. The company in the port of Odesa on the principles of public-private partnership. In general, the berth has been in operation without overhaul for more than 50 years. Its reconstruction is carried out due to the conclusion of its technical lifetime.

Due to the change in the configuration of the berthing line of the Quarantine Harbor, the longest berth of the port will increase by another 29 m after the reconstruction. Its length will be 386 m. The high density of the pile field envisaged by the project is designed for larger loads than before. Depth near the border will be brought to 13.5 m.

Denis Karpov: ‘Odesa port and Zonguldak port are connected by a regular line of delivery of ‘New Year's’ fruit import to Ukraine

Denis Karpov, acting head of the Odesa branch of the State Enterprise ‘Ukrainian Sea Ports Authority’, presented production capacities and investment projects for the Odesa port development at a meeting of representatives of the Odesa region business circles with a delegation of the Turkish province of Zonguldak. The meeting took place yesterday, November 4, in the Odesa Regional State Administration. The event was organized by the regional representative of the Ukrainian National Committee of the International Chamber of Commerce (ICC Ukraine) and the Department of Investments, International and Interregional Cooperation of the Odesa State Administration.

When discussing the prospects for expanding trade and economic ties between the regions of the two countries, in particular, they talked about establishing closer cooperation of the sea ports. In a short comment after the meeting, D. Karpov noted that the Odesa port and the Turkish province are connected by the regular Odesa-Zonguldak-Odesa line for the delivery of citrus fruits.

‘Yes, the Zonguldak port is the main transshipment base of the Black Sea area for Turkish fruit and vegetable exports,’ D. Karpov said. ‘And Odesa has been one of the permanent recipients of this export for more than 15 years in a row. Every year from October to March inclusive, ro-ro vessels are brought weekly to berth No. 21 of Cabotage Harbor from a consignment of citrus fruits from Turkey. In total, 40-60 thousand tons of lemons, tangerines and oranges run over the season. The peak season falls in December-January. Freight forwarders call this period the ‘New Year's delivery’ of tropical fruits ... Of course, Odesa sea port Authority is interested in vessels on the line running loaded not only to Odesa. Therefore, during negotiations in the b2b format with our Turkish partners, we raised the issue of the possibility to expand the range of goods on the line at the expense of Ukrainian exports, and possibly transit ...’

According to the media, yesterday's meeting in the Odesa State Administration resulted in the signing of a Memorandum of Cooperation between business circles of the Odesa region and the Zonguldak province. The signing ceremony was attended by Maxim Kutsyi, the chairman of the Odesa State Administration, Erdogan Bektash, the governor of the province Zonguldak, and Omer Selim Olan, the mayor of Zonguldak.

Odesa sea port authority received a delegation of the Klaipeda Municipality Youth Council

Odesa and Klaipeda are well-known in Europe sea ports and international tourist centers. Partnership between the two cities are secured by twinning agreements. Therefore, it is logical that the expansion of this partnership has reached the stage of establishing working contacts between youth organizations of the two municipalities. This was discussed at a meeting in Odesa port, which took place today as part of a visit to Odesa by a delegation of the Klaipeda Municipality Youth Council (Lithuania).

Yesterday, the guests from Lithuania visited the Odesa City Council, where they signed a Memorandum of Cooperation with the Odesa Mayor Youth Council.

The visit to Odesa port as a part of this visit was not accidental, since it was the Youth Organization of the SE ‘Ukrainian Sea Ports Authority’ (the leader is Denis Buzinovskaya) that at initiated the establishment of working contacts with colleagues from Klaipeda; and a cooperation agreement between Odesa port and Klaipeda port was signed in 2015 and is being actively implemented in the field of exchange of experience in the transport processes management, IT technology, new methods of protecting the ecology of the sea, etc.

In particular, Denis Karpov, acting general manger of the port Authority spoke about this at the meeting with representatives of the Klaipeda Youth Council.

‘Back in 2003, the sea ports of Lithuania and Ukraine were literally and figuratively connected by the Viking, regular intermodal transport train, a joint project of the railways of Lithuania, Belarus and Ukraine, as well as stevedoring companies of the ports of Klaipeda, Illichivsk and Odesa,’ D. Karpov noted . ‘Among the recent joint projects, the signing of the Memorandum of Cooperation between Odesa Port Authority and the KLAIPEDOS NAFTA company, which specializes in the transshipment of oil products and operates one of the most efficient LNG terminals for the reception and regasification of liquefied gas, can be singled out in July this year. I hope that the contacts between youth associations of the two coastal cities of Lithuania and Ukraine will also take on the outlines of specific joint projects - interesting, creative, useful in terms of gaining specific professional experience. The horizons of cooperation in the field of public youth diplomacy are very wide ...

Vladimir Zaikov, the chairman of Odesa port trade union, who also took part in the meeting, emphasized that the Odesa Port Youth Organization (OPYO) was created in 2007 precisely on the initiative of the trade unions and became the first ‘youth’ at the enterprises of the domestic maritime industry.

‘For the first fifteen years of Ukrainian independence, Odesa port transferred financial and economic activities to market rails, made a real breakthrough in the development of its production capacities and increased cargo turnover, and became truly the first European port in Ukraine. At a certain moment, we realized the need to create a talent pool so that a new generation brought up on modern business technologies and management digitalization could manage the port in the 21st century. And not only this. The question arose before us: who will defend the social gains of the collective? So the idea of creating a port youth organization was born. We created it and time has shown the correctness of this decision,’ V.Zaikov said.

Today, the OPYO has almost 250 members and is the most active member of the industry youth association. At the meeting with Lithuanian colleagues, Olga Galadzhyan, the leader of the organization, presented the main activities of public youth organizations of the sea ports of Ukraine. It supposes holding of humanitarian, charity and volunteer actions to help socially vulnerable groups of the population, measures to protect the environment and improve the ecology in coastal cities, conducting sports competitions between port teams, organization of training seminars for professional growth and promotion of the employment of young professionals ...

Aistė Valadkienė, the coordinator for youth affairs of Klaipeda city municipality, in her turn, acquainted the receiving side with the projects that are being implemented by activists of the organization led by her. The youth of Klaipeda are actively cooperating with the municipality in terms of gaining experience in city self-government and the functioning of state institutions. Activists also communicate with existing politicians, learn from the experience of upholding the values of democracy and the fight against corruption. The most ambitious project of the Youth Council under the municipality was to participate in an international competition for the title of Youth Capital of Europe. Work in this direction was being carried out for several years and successeded: in November 2018, a ceremony was held in Serbia to award Klaipeda the title ‘European Youth Capital 2021’, which was participated by representatives of the Council of Europe, the European Parliament, the OSCE and the Congress of Local and Regional Authorities.

Odesa Sea Port Authority expressed respect to the Captain of the cruise ship MS AMERA

Today, October 30, 2019, representatives of Odesa Sea Port Authority expressed respect to the administration of the first foreign cruise ship visiting Odesa after more than a two-year break. Denis Karpov, acting General Manager of the Odesa branch of the State Enterprise ‘Ukrainian Sea Ports Authority’, Ruslan Sakhautdinov, Deputy General Manager on operation services of the branch, and Ihor Panchenko, head of cruise infrastructure and external relations service boarded the MS AMERA liner (204 m, flag - Bahamas). Jens Thorne (German), Captain of MS AMERA, hosted the guests on the ship’s bridge. The parties exchanged souvenirs and impressions from today's call of the cruise ship to the Odesa port.

‘Today's visit of AMERA was a joyful event for the inhabitants of Odesa, who have been deprived of observing the silhouettes of large familiar to the city passenger ships at the berths of the passenger terminal for more than two years,’ D. Karpov noted. ‘This is also a significant moment for us since the arrival of the vessel was the result of the constant and systematic efforts of port Authority towards the restoring of cruise shipping in the Black Sea after the events in Ukraine and Turkey in 2014-2016. Despite unfavorable circumstances, Odesa port has not stopped coordinating with its cruise business partners a single day, took part in international tourism forums and has been an active member in the framework of the Medcruise Association. During negotiations with our partners, we reasonably proved that Odesa, being called the sea capital of Ukraine, is still hospitable and safe for foreign tourists. I hope you have made sure of that today.’

During the conversation, D. Karpov also emphasized the symbolism of MS AMERA's call: the “first swallow” of the white ships` return to the Black Sea has the logo of the shipowner Phoenix Reisen on its pipe, a white seagull against the Sun. Others will follow the first seagull: the port expects 11 cruise liners with a foreign flag next year and 16 applications were received for 2021

...

The captain of the MS AMERA vessel, in his turn, admitted that it is not his first call of a passenger ship to Odesa harbor. He had an opportunity to verify the hospitality of Odesa residents more than five years ago. When a severe storm arose on the sea and his vessel was forced to stay in Odesa port for three days, the cruise administration received all kinds of assistance from local travel agencies, which expanded and diversified the program for tourists in our city. At the same time, the captain maintained close contact with port Authority: the vessel was provided with everything necessary.

‘This is not the first time I have been visiting you, and I gladly accepted the news of the opportunity to see your port and the Potemkinskaia stairs again, which I have already climbed earlier,’ Captain Jens Thorn concluded his speech.

At the end of the meeting, the captain kindly invited the guests to take a short tour around the vessel, which has been renovated for several tens of millions of dollars this year.

As previously reported, MS AMERA will leave Odesa port today at 18:00 and head for Istanbul.

MedCruise General Assembly: Cruise companies are still interested in calling to the Black Sea region and Odesa in particular

From 1 to 4, October 2019, Antibes (France) was holding the next General Assembly of the MedCruise, Association of Mediterranean ports and adjacent seas. Being a member of this international cruise infrastructure organization, Odesa port took part in the event. The enterprise was represented by Julia Strikh, the head of the tourism and European integration department of port Authority.

‘Participation in the events held by MedCruise is very important for us,’ J. Strikh stated. “This is an opportunity to negotiate in B2B format with leading cruise business players and the international press representatives specializing in this issue. Our first priority is to cover the activities of the Black Sea regionworking group aimed at restoring cruise tourism on the Black Sea as much as possible, to talk about the tourist attractiveness of Odesa, new routes and excursion programs of our city. According to representatives of the cruise business, interest in the Black Sea region and Odesa, particularly, remains.

The representative of Odesa port held about 15 meetings with journalists of the international press and top managers of cruise companies. In particular, B2B meetings were conducted with representatives of such international publications as International Cruise & Ferry Review, Cruise Times, Seatrade Cruise Review, Cruise Insight, The Cruise Diaries, Cruise News Media Group, Cruise Business Review. It was managed to agree on 7 free publications on the activities of the Black Sea working group, the first results, namely those planned for 2020-2021 calls at the Black Sea ports, as well as the tourist attractiveness of Odesa on the Internet or in print media. Such publications are one of the activity areas of the Black Sea working group, as they allow not only to provide information about the Black Sea ports, but also to popularize the cities of the region.

Besides, meetings with representatives of cruise companies were also held in the B2B format. During these meetings, top managers of such companies as Holland America Line, TUI Cruises, Carnival Corp. expressed their position: they are waiting for the situation after the opening of a new passenger terminal in Istanbul in 2020. The opening of the terminal in Istanbul, which is the gateway and base port for many cruise companies on the Black Sea, will serve as a boost for passenger liners to return to this region, including Odesa.

For instance, Carnival Corporation representatives stated that due to adverse events in Istanbul and the geopolitical situation in Ukraine, the vessels of the companies included in the corporation were not going to return to the Black Sea region until 2021. Seabourn company must be the first to make calls.

MSC Vice President announced the planned expansion of the fleet until 2023, which should be replenished with small vessels capable of unchallenged passing through the Bosphorus Strait.

Ponant, which had submitted two applications for calling at Odesa port in 2020 and two in 2021, is going to continue including Odesa port along with other ports of the Black Sea region in tourist itineraries since about 40 percent of total consumer demand falls on the Black Sea region.

Scenic Luxury Cruises Development Manager said that, finally, the company was able to make a schedule of calls for the coming years. So, in 2022, from 1 to 2 calls to Odesa port are planned.

In general, almost all representatives of the cruise companies noted the positive tendency of the gradual return of ‘white ships’ to the ports of the Black Sea region.

Potential partners were interested in the technical characteristics of the passenger terminals of Odesa, Constanta, Varna, Burgas and coastal tourism services, the amount of port charges and other issues.

- Each participation of Odesa Sea Port Authority in the events of the cruise industry is another step on the difficult path of restoring cruise shipping in the Black Sea region and, in particular, to the Odesa port. And this intense and consistent work is producing results. This time, the outcome of the talks in Hamburg exceeded all expectations. The Odesa delegates held about 12 meetings with representatives of various departments of the following cruise lines: Costa Cruises, Royal Caribbean Cruises, Holland America Line, Silversea Cruises, Noble Caledonia, and others. The negotiations made it possible for us to expect additional 6 ship calls besides the announced 11 calls in 2021, and 2 additional calls in 2022, - Igor Tkachuk, General Manager of Odesa Sea Port Authority commented the Odesa delegates visiting the Seatrade Europe 2019 exhibition.

According to the talks, the forecasts for the coming years are favorable. Many world-famous companies announced their return to the Black Sea region, in particular to Odesa, in 2021 and 2022. For example, Silversea Cruises are going to return to Odesa in 2021 (the vessel Silver Shadow). Christopher Allan, Royal Caribbean's Itinerary Planning Director said that apart from four (2 in 2020 and 2 in 2021) announced ship calls, another 3 additional Azamara Cruises were expected in 2021, as well as a possible call of Celebrity Cruises in 2022. James Buchanan, head of ground operations of Noble Caledonia announced the company’s return to the Black Sea region since 2021 (Caledonian Sky liner).

The companies that are not planning to call at the port of Odesa (Holland America Line, Celestyal Cruises) during the next 2 years were provided with all the information of interest, including discounts on port charges and the tourist potential of Odesa.

The representatives of the port Authority admit interest of the cruise companies in returning to the Black Sea region and the Odesa port, in particular, as well as the positive tendency of the increasing demand of cruise passengers on visiting the Black Sea ports.

Odesa port initiates the launch of a joint with the Сity Council coordinating body to formulate a cruise tourism development strategy

Odesa returns to Europe's cruise hub club. Today, 11 requests to visit the maritime capital of Ukraine by passenger ships under the foreign flag for 2020 and 10 applications for 2021 have been received. This breakthrough against the background of last year's zero indicators and two requests for 2019 was the result of the active cooperation of Odesa Sea Port Authority with the world`s largest Cruise Port Association Medcruise and Black Sea Working Group Meeting partners. At the same time, at the local level, the coordination of the port and the city authorities` efforts in the development of cruise tourism have sporadic character. Transfer these contacts into the collaborative system work area opens up opportunities to serve passengers of ‘white steamers’ in Odesa at a new level. This was discussed at the working meeting with the port representatives and executive committee of the Odesa City Council yesterday, 22 August.

Tatyana Markova, the director of the Department of Culture and Tourism and Alexander Ilko, the director of the Department of Transport, Communications, and Traffic, represented the City Council in the discussion. Odesa Sea Port Authority was represented by Ruslan Sakhautdinov, Deputy General Manager on operation services of Port Authority, Ihor Panchenko, Head of Cruise Infrastructure and External Relations Services, Yuliia Strikh, Head of Tourism and European Integration Department.

- In order to bring back the big cruise ships to Odesa, we actively use the tools of the negotiation platforms of the largest tourist forums in Europe and the United States, including the international Cruise Shipping Miami International Exhibition and Conference and The General Assemblies of the Medcruise Association, - states R. Sakhautdinov. — At the same time, our negotiations with cruise line operators could be more effective if a representative of the Odesa City Council took part in them. After all, addressing many cruise ship onshore issues belongs to the competence of the city government. This concerns the organization of the excursion buses movement in the conditions of dense car traffic, providing comfortable conditions for physically disabled tourists movement in the city streets and so on. And moreover, in the leading cruise ports of Europe port authorities and city authorities jointly create a tourism development strategy …

Among other things, the working meeting participants discussed the issues of tourist coastal services, announced by representatives of the maritime travel industry at 54th General Assembly of Medcruise (May 2019, Kusadasi, Turkey). In particular, the meeting concerned the improving of the public transport system, launching proper social structure for tourists (sanitary areas, medical assistance, transferring with children), enhancing public safety at the historic center during cruise vessel calls in the harbor. Cruise companies also want to get up-to-date marketing forwarding with tourist products at the local level.

- A program of tourism development in Odesa launched a year ago was introduced a new destination, cruise tourism, - noted T. Markova – So, obviously, today we are negotiating with the Port about cooperation in this industry. We hope that representative of the City Council and other representatives of the port will be proxy to our partners the cultural and historical heritage and tourist routes of our city at the next Medcruise General Assembly. We also welcomed the news of the establishment of the permanent working group on the initiative of Odesa Port, which will be participated by representatives of Ukraine, Romania, Bulgaria, and Turkey. I think we could also be involved in the marketing practices of this body. Moreover, we have something to present: for the last years the Executive Committee of the City Council has made a real breakthrough in tourist infrastructure arrangements, we participate in 33 international tourism exhibitions, we have a large number of high-quality promotional materials.

In his turn, O. Ilko stated that the creation of the relationship between the City Council and the state enterprise represented by Odesa Sea Port Authority will greatly facilitate the work of the city Department of Transportation aimed at preventing technological disruptions during cruise tourists servicing in the historical center of Odesa.

At the end of the meeting, the participants discussed the draft of Memorandum of launching the joint coordinating development strategies body of cruise tourism in Odesa by port Authority and the Executive Committee. After signing the document, the parties will be capable of proceeding to a joint marketing action plan.
